The Diversity and Inclusion and Recruiting teams are collaborating to create a pilot program that develops a stronger pipeline for underrepresented talent at Pivotal. This pilot, the Pivotal Rise Program, offers full time, entry-level positions to 4-8 graduating students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) who are interested in a career in STEM. Students from all HBCUs who identify with a group that is historically underrepresented in the technology industry, including but not limited to Black, Hispanic and/or Latino, Native American, students with disabilities, and veterans, are encouraged to apply.

Our vision for the Pivotal Rise Program is for participants to learn, grow, and thrive as part of a carefully selected two-year cohort. We’re have an on-campus recruiting and engagement strategy at North Carolina A&T, our pilot university partner, over the month of February to foster relationships with students who may be interested in applying.  This opportunity will also be posted across several other HBCU job boards.

Program participants will join Pivotal in summer/fall of 2019 and work day to day on the Pivotal Cloud Foundry Engineering Team, pairing with senior level technical Pivots. Throughout the program, participants will have the unique opportunity to take advantage of additional support and professional development opportunities including mentorship, direct access to executives, and integration into the broader Pivotal community. We hope to foster a community in their cohort team, office, and the company at large. Pilot participants will also have the unique opportunity to work hand-in-hand with the Pivotal Rise project team to shape and influence the direction of this program.

The Role

We’re looking for a full-time, internal candidate to rotate onto the Diversity and Inclusion team for six months starting in March 2019. The Pivotal Rise Program Manager will report to Natalie Bonifede and collaborate closely with the recruiting team and Rise project team to help manage and drive all aspects of the pilot. Pivots from all business units and geographies are encouraged to apply.  


You are an empathetic communicator with a knack for developing others at work. You anticipate people problems and develop strong relationships that allow your peers to work through them. You understand the way engineers work at Pivotal, and use that knowledge to design systems and structures that will help our Risers thrive both technically and interpersonally. You have a passion for coaching people to be their best selves and have experience working with diverse populations. You understand the need to meet people where they are at while enabling them to go outside of their comfort zone. Finally, you deeply understand the benefits this program will bring to Pivotal, both in the short and long-term.

Your Day

No day will be the same while running the Pivotal Rise pilot! As the program manager you will be asked to switch between innovator, consultant, and coach early and often. You will spend time developing and refining the program; delivering workshops to both engineers and their managers; communicating with stakeholders and iterating on the pilot design as necessary. You’ll plan and coordinate events between mentors, and Risers, consult and coach managers and  share your learnings, wins, and challenges with the D&I and Recruiting team as you develop the program from the ground up.

Over the course of the six month rotation, you’ll be responsible for supporting program preparation and the launch and development of the program.

Program Preparation:

  • You will collaborate with the Pivotal RISE project team to design the pilot, including:
    • University partnership management
    • Onsite recruiting events and processes
    • Participant selection and Interviewing processes
    • Onboarding RISERS to Pivotal
    • Collaborating with R&D and D&I teams to design program components and experiences

Program Period:

  • You will collaborate with the Pivotal RISE project team to design the pilot, including:
    • Conducting regular check ins with RISERS and key stakeholders for monitoring and evaluation at the program and individual level  
    • Conducting ongoing research and iterating on the pilot based on findings
    • Coaching engineering managers on how to best support their Risers
    • Collaborating with the R&D and D&I team to build and execute MVP Pivotal RISE mentorship program
    • Determining plan to integrate RISERS into Pivotal community via Employee Resource Groups, office meetups, etc.
    • Creating a soft skills/professional learning curriculum (i.e. interview practice, how to initiate career conversations, etc.).
    • Coordinating cohort events and projects for class 1 RISERS
    • Providing regular updates to key stakeholders, including leadership

Required Skills/ Experience:

  • 5-7 years of program management or related experience
  • Client facing client management experience
  • Stakeholder management experience
  • People management, mentorship, coaching or teaching experience
  • Facilitation skills and/or comfort with public speaking
  • Passion for and/or past experience in the D&I or related field

Desired Skills/ Experience:

  • HBCU alumni or involvement in Black Associations
  • Familiarity with recruiting space and hiring best practices
  • Understanding of how to navigate Pivotal
  • Passion for developing talent and coaching others
