The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Design Technologist to join our expanding UX practice. Front-end developers with design experience, or UX designers with a bent towards UI development have the hybrid skills we seek for this new role. We’re pushing beyond the tired “Should Designers Code?” debate, and rounding out our expanding User Experience team with a specialized skill set to enable all of us to do our best work.

You will be the technical liaison between a research-driven, non-technical UX team, and our engineering counterparts in Research & Development (R&D). Your experience and perspective is
a valuable addition to our conversations and collaborations, and your work will help assess the technical impact and requirements of design decisions.

We want someone who takes initiative and feedback equally well. This role is about exploration, experimentation, and validation through prototyping. You’ll be working closely with your UX Design peers to prove design concepts in code, working side-by-side with UX Research to provide proofs of concept in support of their research plans and testing, and collaborating with full-stack Engineers to build optimal, design-driven experiences for our users. We’re a fluid, collaborative product team— you’ll also be working closely with Quality Engineers, Technical Writers, Product Managers, and Scrum Masters.

This role reports to the Director of User Experience.

Your Responsibilities

  • Understand complex technical concepts and communicate them simply through functional prototypes that meet accessibility requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to “sketch in code” — you use design as a tool to communicate ideas and show what’s possible

  • Advance Boomi’s capabilities through technical experimentation, and informed recommendations — how might we do things differently; as well as how do we begin doing things differently (e.g., responsive design)

  • Collaborate and communicate across teams and roles

  • Design with consistency, and with an attention to detail

  • Exhibit familiarity with, and a shared value for, user-centered design and its core principles

  • Contribute to our design systems, UI guidelines, and their maintenance

  • Prototype with a demonstrated understanding of WCAG 2.1, including ARIA

Requirements of this Position

  • Professional experience in the design and/or front-end development of complex business systems and applications, or product development

  • Strong empathy for our users, and the ability to understand their needs

  • Demonstrated ability to translate technical requirements and considerations to a non-technical group of designers

  • Demonstrated ability to translate UX Design considerations to technically-minded developers, QAs, and product managers

  • A minimum of 5 years experience writing semantic HTML, with strong knowledge of HTML 5.

  • Experience with CSS 3 (including animation), vanilla Javascript, cross-browser compatibility, and responsive design. Skills in Flexbox, CSS Grid, React, and GWT a plus.

  • Exceptional verbal and visual communication skills

  • The ability to effectively manage “up”

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize

  • Occasional travel spanning 2-5 days (<10% travel)

  • The desire to collaborate, with the ability to operate with minimal oversight

  • Comfort operating as a developer adjacent to, but outside of, the engineering department

  • A willingness to provide and accept constructive criticism

  • A portfolio of work and/or code samples to show us how your ideas manifest (e.g., personal website, Github account, etc.)

Preferred Skills

  • Visual thinkers with an affinity for the whiteboard

  • Experience as a project lead

  • Experience building APIs

  • Experience working in Agile environments

  • Involvement in the UX community

Benefits

We offer highly competitive salaries, bonus programs, world-class benefits, and unparalleled growth and development opportunities — all to create a compelling and rewarding work environment.
